The Legacy of A Great Man
Nestor Martin Luther Cummings
November 29, 1946 - March 18, 2008

Who holds your history? Who tells your story? Who is your voice? Griots, masters of words and music have long been the keepers of African history. Nestor IS the voice who speaks for the Jerome, Cummings, Mc Lean genealogy. He speaks through all of us who have shared, responded, or informed on the legacy of family matters. Visit the Carriacou Family Web site to see and hear the words and essence of our families…of our history and culture that Nestor speaks as relevant as renowned Griots of West African origin. Griots were historians, genealogists, advisors to nobility, entertainers…the lists goes on. Beryl Jerome-Cummings, the female predecessor to Nestor; herself, a Griotte, identified in her research that the Cummings side of the family were Ibos from Nigeria; and the Jerome/Noel side of the family originated from the Congo. We owe great gratitude to Beryl for her tireless effort in researching the family tree and especially for "fanning the flames" that ignited Nestor's interest in the Legacy of Our Carriacou Family.

A new era was upon those of us who represented first generation in the United States, Canada, Europe, and other parts of the world that our forefathers traveled to from the Islands of Carriacou, Grenada, Tobago, and Trinidad to name a few. In July 2003, the First Annual Cummings-Jerome-Mc Lean Family Reunion took place in New York City. Through the efforts of many, but especially the creation of the Carriacou Family Web Site by Nestor, word traveled fast with the theme "Reuniting The Roots." The collaboration between the annual family reunion and the Carriacou Family Web Site had been and continues to be the stimulus to "Bringing Us Together and Connecting The Legacy." Nestor loved the knowledge that "We All Stem From The Same Tree!"

It is said that to become a Griot, you must learn genealogies and histories, but not just the words, also the music. A sitting with Nestor was an opportunity to take a vicarious experience you were sure to enjoy as he enlightened you artistically and musically. He loved the old-time music of Calypso, Soca , and Reggae performers whose songs often depicted the life and culture of Caribbean people. Nestor especially loved a song often sang by our mother, "Take a drink another bottle will come; Everyone must drink if they able…" The song epitomizes the hospitable nature of Caribbean people and especially Nestor. His bright smile and robust, friendly view on life melted all who experienced this multi-talented Sagittarian.

Consequently, it was no surprise that Nestor was passionate about his belief in family values as taught by his parents and extended family and friends. He worshiped his wife Elvia Ayers-Cummings, and his two daughters Leilani and Alike. He held in high esteem the elders of the Caribbean family and community and often proudly acknowledged his African roots.

Ultimately, Nestor's only complaint would probably be that life was too short! Nevertheless, he lived life to its fullest right up to the end and in a manner worthy of emulating. I researched several books that offered inspirational or positive messages that would do justice to the life of a good human-being. In the end, his tribute to the late Peter Alexis was all that was needed:

"DO THE RIGHT THING. KNOW AND APPRECIATE YOUR CULTURE; UNDERSTAND YOUR HISTORY AND WHAT YOUR ANCESTORS HAVE DONE FOR YOU; RAISE YOUR CHILDREN WELL; RESPECT YOUR ELDERS; AND WALK GOOD WITH EVERYONE."

Nestor's legacy and the legacy of the Carriacou Family History will live on within all of us! Let us continue to connect the legacy.

The Cummings family is committed to providing the CarriacouFamilyWebSite.com service in tribute to its creator, "Nestor" Martin Luther Cummings. We look forward to "staying connected" with our family's legacy and, of course, you, our dear and beloved family. WALK GOOD AND STAY TUNED!
Peace and eternal Love!
The dedication to the history  of our family as sons and daughters of Carriacou, Grenada, by the late Beryl Jerome-Cummings, daughter of  Clifford "Appa" Jerome, has led to us regaining contact with each other from Europe, Canada, the West Indies, the U.S.A., and S.A.

"Uncle Clifford"  was the oldest of Ahsay's children, and he was the first  of her immediate family to  immigrate to the U.S.A. (New York)  in 1919 at the age of nineteen.

Many people have returned to Carriacou to live. Some younger people have relocated from the Americas and Europe, and older people have retired there. Quite a few new, large, modern homes have been built all over the island, and a great deal of expertise gained abroad is now very present. A safe, desireable island,  non-Carriacouans, including Canadians, Germans, the British, and Americans have chosen to live there as well on recently purchased land, on yatchs in Harvey Vale and Tyrrel Bay,  or simply off the coast with their children attending local schools.

BEGINNING, Wednesday, August 1ST, THERE WAS AN Opening Day Service at Christ the King Anglican Church at 9:30 A.M. In Hillsborough. This was followed by a Saraca Feast in Brunswick on the Jerome Family Land from 3 P.M. until. Although there was a passing shower of tropical rain, the festivities were lively with the ladies preparing rolled rice and coocoo, while others washed, seasoned and cooked a few pigs, sheep, chickens, and a goat. Uncle Shem led the verbal way with conversation recalling the history and culture of the family in Carriacou as well as the travels and exploits of the many relatives that went to Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Aruba, England, Canada, and Holland seeking and finding their fortune.

While the Regatta boat races went on and the evening witnessed traditional shows at the Tennis Court in Hillsborough, music and dancing to Jab-Jab Grenadian soca was ever-present at the JUPA, located at the Jetty, and venders prepared and sold fresh conch soup, codfish cakes, fried chicken and other delicacies in the street.
